NYC Yellow Taxi Drivers Protest Mayor's Disgraceful Medallion Plan

"The Mayor's plan is a disgraceful betrayal from a city that already has blood on its hands." NYTWA ED Bhairavi Desai

New York, NY- New York City's yellow taxi drivers held a protest and press conference outside Gracie Mansion at 2 PM on Tuesday March 9, 2021 to speak out against Mayor Bill de Blasio's medallion plan, which is a cash giveaway to lenders but leaves drivers drowning in debt and poverty.

After completing 9 days of protests at Gracie Mansion, we are moving on to City Hall! Join on Sunday at 11AM. Come with your family and friends for a day of action!

When: Sunday, March 21, 2021

What Time: 11am

Where: City Hall

NYTWA Executive Director Bhairavi Desai released the following statement: "Mayor de Blasio's response to our debt crisis does absolutely nothing for drivers. It's a cash bailout for lenders while drivers are left to drown in debt, foreclosure, and bankruptcy. This is not debt forgiveness. This is not a collective solution to our crisis. This is not justice. The mayor's plan is a disgraceful betrayal from a city that already has blood on its hands.

"We've given the mayor ample opportunity to respond to our proposal. Instead, he put forward a plan that costs the city more than our proposal while doing absolutely nothing for the drivers. If the mayor wants war, he can have war. There is no peace without justice for drivers.

"The Mayor's plan is a giveaway to lenders. Senator Ramos' bill is life-saving for the owner-drivers and all medallion owners drowning in a debt crisis caused by the failure of the city. We call on the state to intervene. We call on Senator Schumer to stand up for the people for whom he fought for the stimulus. This is a gross misuse of the good will of the Senator and Congress Members who are putting the money into the Mayor's hands."
